How Many Smoke Alarms Are Required in Queensland? (2027 Guide)

From 1 January 2027, Queensland homes must have photoelectric interconnected smoke alarms installed in accordance with Queensland smoke alarm legislation.

Smoke alarms must be installed in multiple locations throughout the home, including inside bedrooms, in hallways connecting bedrooms and on every storey of the dwelling.

Because alarms must be installed in multiple areas, most homes require between 5 and 8 smoke alarms to meet the Queensland requirements. The exact number depends on the layout of the property.

Where Smoke Alarms Must Be Installed

Under Queensland legislation, smoke alarms must be installed:

• In every bedroom
• In hallways connecting bedrooms
• Between bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling if there is no hallway
• On every storey of the home
• Along the path of travel to exits

All required alarms must also be interconnected, meaning when one alarm activates, all alarms in the home sound simultaneously.

Typical Number of Smoke Alarms Required

The exact number of alarms required depends on the layout of the property, including the number of bedrooms, hallways and storeys.

Typical examples include:

2–3 bedroom single storey home
Typical number of alarms: 4–5

3–4 bedroom single storey home
Typical number of alarms: 5–7

4 bedroom two storey home
Typical number of alarms: 7–9

Large homes
Typical number of alarms: 9–12

These examples are intended as a general guide only. The exact number required will depend on the layout of the individual property.

Typical Smoke Alarm Locations

In Queensland homes, alarms will be installed:

• Inside each bedroom
• In hallways connecting bedrooms
• On every storey of the dwelling
• Along the path from bedrooms to exits

This ensures that if smoke is detected anywhere in the home, all alarms activate at the same time, providing earlier warning.

Typical Interconnected Alarm Packs for Queensland Homes

Because multiple alarms are required, many homeowners choose interconnected smoke alarm packs designed to provide coverage throughout the home.

Common pack sizes include:

6 Alarm Pack – typical 3–4 bedroom single storey home
7 Alarm Pack – larger homes or homes with additional hallways
10 Alarm Pack – two storey homes or larger properties

These packs allow alarms to communicate wirelessly, ensuring the entire system activates if smoke is detected.
