Use this calculator as a general reference to help estimate the number of smoke alarms typically required in a Queensland residential property, based on the information you enter.
Queensland smoke-alarm regulations require interconnected smoke alarms in bedrooms, hallways that connect sleeping areas, and on every storey of the home. Interconnected alarms are not required in areas such as living rooms, laundries, or garages, although additional alarms may be installed in these areas for increased protection.
This calculator provides general guidance only and does not assess individual property layouts, alarm placement, or installation requirements. Where existing 240 V hardwired smoke alarms are present, Queensland regulations require that those alarms be replaced with new interconnected 240 V units. Any additional alarms may be battery-powered or 240 V, provided all alarms interconnect as a single system.
