ANKA lithium battery-powered smoke alarms are cost-effective and simple to set up and install.

In Queensland, homeowners may self-install compliant photoelectric smoke alarms powered by a non-removable 10-year battery. However, 240V hardwired smoke alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Your alarms—and any remote control supplied with your order—are paired and tested by InterconnectedQLD before shipping. You do not need to pair them yourself.

Simply turn on each alarm, remove the plastic battery isolation tab from the remote control, if supplied, and test the complete system before installation.

The pairing instructions below are provided as a reference guide only. You may need them if you:

• Add another alarm or remote to your existing system.
• Accidentally clear an alarm’s pairing data.
• Need to rebuild or troubleshoot the interconnected network.

Do not reset or re-pair your alarms unless necessary, as doing so will remove the pairing completed before shipping.

1. Remove the alarms from their packaging and place them in a row on a table.
2. Turn on each alarm by moving the ON/OFF switch on its underside to the ON position. You should feel or hear two clicks as the switch moves into position.
3. If your order includes a remote control, open its battery compartment and remove the plastic battery isolation tab.
4. Test the complete system:
   
   • If your order includes a remote control, press the TEST button on the remote.
   • If your order does not include a remote control, press the centre TEST button on one alarm.

1. Confirm that every alarm activates.

The alarms will sound for approximately 10 seconds and then silence automatically.

Once you have confirmed that every alarm activates, the system is ready to install.

The following steps are not required when you first receive your order. Your system has already been paired and tested by InterconnectedQLD.

Use these instructions only when adding another device, replacing a device or troubleshooting a pairing problem.

1. Place one alarm slightly apart from the others. This alarm will act as the master while setting up the network.
2. Press and hold the centre button on the master alarm. Count three green flashes, then release the button. The master alarm will flash red rapidly for approximately one minute while it waits for other devices to be paired.
3. Pair each additional alarm individually. Press and hold its centre button, count two green flashes, then release the button. The alarm will flash red twice to confirm that pairing was successful.
4. To pair a remote control, press and hold the TEST button, count two red flashes, then release the button. The remote will flash red twice to confirm that pairing was successful.
5. Test the complete system by pressing the TEST button on the remote or the centre TEST button on one alarm. Confirm that every alarm activates. The alarms will sound for approximately 10 seconds and then silence automatically.

The master alarm remains in pairing mode for approximately one minute.

If you cannot pair every alarm within that time, repeat Step 2 to place the master alarm back into pairing mode, then continue pairing the remaining alarms.

Alarms already paired to the network will remain paired and do not need to be paired again.

If an alarm does not activate during the system test:

1. Press and hold the centre button on the affected alarm.
2. Count four green flashes, then release the button.
3. The alarm will flash red twice to confirm that its pairing data has been cleared and it has returned to its factory settings.
4. Repeat the pairing process from Step 2 above.

2. Count four red flashes, then release the button.
3. The remote will flash red twice to confirm that its pairing data has been cleared.
4. Repeat the pairing process from Step 2 above.

Where practicable, smoke alarms must be installed on the ceiling.

A smoke alarm must not be installed:

• Within 300 mm of a corner where the ceiling meets a wall.
• Within 300 mm of a light fitting.
• Within 400 mm of an opening that supplies air from an air conditioner or forced-air ventilation system.
• Within 400 mm of the blades of a ceiling fan.
• In a stairwell position where an obstruction could prevent rising smoke from reaching the alarm.

For a sloping ceiling, the alarm must be installed between 500 mm and 1,500 mm from the apex.

If mounting an alarm on the ceiling is not practicable, different requirements apply to installation on a wall or exposed beam.

Always follow the alarm manufacturer’s mounting instructions. Special placement requirements apply to stairways, sloping ceilings, exposed beams and other non-standard ceiling arrangements.

These placement requirements are set out in the Building Regulation 2021. If you are unsure about the correct location for an alarm, seek advice from a suitably qualified professional before installation.
